It's time to talk about beer.

I hate to tease you with a beer you'll probably never get your hands on, but I like it too much not to talk about it! First, the label description: "Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Ale is a seamless blend of Schlafly Barleywine-style Ale and our Pale Ale aged in Kentucky Bourbon Barrels. The result is smooth Bourbon character balanced by caramel malt sweetness and classic English hops." This special release from Schlafly is currently distributed in Kentucky only. perhaps to thank us for all the bourbon barrels. ABV unknown; beer guy at Party Town said 6.4% (I was a day too late for a growler fill, dammit) though, seat-of-the-pants, it seems a little stronger. Pours a medium coppery amber, modest off-white head that diminishes quickly with light lacing. Nose is primarily malt, with a subtle floral note. Pretty unremarkable, until it passes the lips. Malt leads the way, followed by an interesting tang that combines a relatively mellow hops presence with a very mild bourbon bite. Between malt, hops and oaky bourbon, no one element dominates; the balance is exquisite! Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, finishes with a mild bitterness and a strong urge to crack open another one. Might be the best sub-$10 sixpack I've ever had! I hope Schlafly puts this one in the regular line-up; I'll drink it, if they'll brew it! |

I have to agree, one of the best beers around. ABV has to be higher than 6.4. I took a bottle up to Wisconsin and the guy that I gave it to actually had goose-bumps on his arms when he saw it (he's a beer distributer, so he's consumed lots). I picked up a case just for me. Did the store have any more sixers? |

Sounds good Fretwalker. Bourbon barrels seem like the perfect vessel for beer. Any beer I've tried of that style seems to go down mighty fine! |

Paul, all my regular beerstores, C&B, PS. PT, have plenty on display. How long will it last? I wish I knew! Gave me gooseflesh, too, on first tasting. I've recently had Schlafly's Reserve Impy Stout; the bourbon really shines there. If this is what Schlafly typically does with bourbon barrels, they can have all the barrels they want (Scotch distillers be damned) Hell, I'll gladly deliver them myself, if I can have a wee taste! |

If I could afford to pay for beer shipping (I need a job!) I'd send y'all a hundred sixers of this jewel, and organize a Thousand Sot's March to St.Louis to demand they brew Bourbon Barrel Ale year-round, in mass quantities!! |

How does it compare to the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout? |

your description sounds reminds me of the central waters bourbon barrel stout which also has a cult-like following. i want to try it! hard to compare this to the BCS as this one seems to be half the ABV and half the price |

When BBA first hits the tongue, the palate's memory says barleywine, then the balancing act starts. Never really sure if the tang is hops or bourbon or what proportion of the two; the bourbon never really comes to the front, just sings its part in the harmony. mikeymoaz, I actually like Schlafly Reserve Impy Stout just a tad better than GI Bourbon County, and I've had both recently. Come to think of it, I think there's a GIBCS left in the fridge, and an empty glass in front of me...hmmm... |

How does it compare to the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout? The Schlafly Reserve Bourbon-Aged Imperial Stout has a sweeter, stickier palate than the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. The bourbon aroma is more prominent on Goose Island. For quaffability, neither is a quick drinker...they're both for savoring in that snifter glass. I've had the Schlafly twice this year; the Goose Island over half a dozen times. Both are quite delicious. |
