We have a member headed up to Michigan from Georgia this week. His homework for the trip is to bring back at least 1 Micro brew. Any suggestions?

Good call, Mark, on the Jolly Pumpkin. http://www.jollypumpkin.com/brewery.htm A few more: Bell's Brewery (Kalamazoo) - Two-Hearted Ale is a world-class IPA; see ibbjamin's recent review. Expedition Stout is a fabulous impy stout. Can't go wrong, though, with any Bell's brew! http://www.bellsbeer.com/index.php/home Founders Brewery (Grand Rapids) - Again, excellent beers all the way down the list, they have a wonderful touch with malt. My faves include Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale, Curmudgeon Old Ale, Porter, and some of the best imperial stouts I've ever tasted. Devil Dancer (DIPA), on the other end of the spectrum, is nicely balanced, considering 12% ABV and 112 IBU. http://www.foundersbrewing.com/ New Holland Brewing (Holland) - try Dragon's Milk Oak-aged Ale, Golden Cap Saison, and Mad Hatter IPA. http://newhollandbrew.com/ Just one microbrew? Hell, I'd load him up with a dozen empty growlers, a few hundred bucks, spend what's left on bottles! |

Good call on the Jolly Pumpkin Mark. Can't really say which of theirs are the best since I've only have one or two of them. The definitely specialize in unique variations of Belgian styles. In addition, the following beers are brewed in Michigan and are not available in Georgia: New Holland Night Tripper - Excellent 10.8% ABV Imperial Stout I have also heard their Mad Hatter DIPA is good, yet I have not opened my bottle yet, so I cannot attest to that. It is not the right time of year to get it (brewed once a year in Spring), but if you can find the Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, it is rated one of the best beers in the world. If not, their regular, year round Breakfast Stout is one of the best in the business as well. Other than that, Bell's is brewed there in Kalamazoo, but you can already get that beer in Georgia I believe. Happy hunting to him! Do you know what area he's going to be in? |

We replied at the same time there fretwalker...you beat me to it ;) Funny to read yours has the same recommendations as mine, but I'm not surprised... I'm going to have to crack that bottle of Hatter I have chilling in my fridge tonight. TGIF! |

Great minds do, indeed, think alike, bro! Founders just hit KY in April this year, and my favorite beerstore now usually has at least one Founders brew on the growler station.. I think I like the "regular" impy stout more than even KBS or CBS. Cheers! |
